Long Island American Water Encourages Customers to Use Water Wisely

With the extreme hot and dry weather, water usage has reached unusually high demands. Because of this, Long Island American Water is asking our customers to minimize non-essential water usage and follow an odd/even schedule for outdoor water usage.

The odd/even schedule is set forth by the Nassau County Ordinance and works as follows:

  • Watering your lawn on odd days if your street address is an odd number (i.e., 23 Oak St., 277 Maple Ave.). No lawn watering should occur between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Watering your lawn on even days if your street address is an even number (i.e., 6 Oak St., 354 Maple Ave.). No lawn watering should occur between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

We also urge customers to use water wisely by taking the following steps:

INSIDE YOUR HOME

  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.
  • Install water-saving showerheads and faucet aerators in your sinks.
  • Shorten showers to 7-10 minutes.
  • Run only full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine.

OUTSIDE YOUR HOME

  • Use a broom, not a hose, for cleaning patios, sidewalks and driveways.
  • Take your car to a car wash that recycles water.
  • Water your lawn and plants only when they need it.
  • Do not start a new lawn.
  • Plant appropriate plants for the climate. Check with local nurseries about non-invasive, drought-tolerant plants.
